Psalms 111:6
He hath shewed his people the power of his workes: that he may giue them the heritage of the heathen. Psalms 111:6 (KJV)
Psalm 111 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving that exalts the greatness and faithfulness of God, recounting His mighty works and His covenant with His people. To gain a better understanding of the verse, it is important to consider this context.
God’s Revelation of His Power: The verse begins by declaring that God has shown His people the power of His works. Throughout Scripture we see numerous instances of God displaying His power and might—creation of the world, the parting of the Red Sea, the provision of manna in the wilderness, and the miracles performed by Jesus Christ.
The Purpose of God’s Revelation: The verse states that God shows His people the power of His works so that He may give them the heritage of the heathen. This can be understood in two ways. a. Inheritance of the Promised Land: In the Old Testament God promised the land of Canaan to Israel as their inheritance (Genesis 12:7; Exodus 32:13). The power of God’s works, including deliverance from Egypt and the conquest of the Promised Land, demonstrated His faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. b. Spiritual Inheritance: The “heritage of the heathen” may also refer to the blessings and spiritual inheritance God bestows upon His people. Through His powerful works He reveals His character, love, and faithfulness, granting believers an inheritance of grace, salvation, and eternal life.
Application to Believers: As believers today we can draw several lessons. a. Recognizing God’s Power: We should be attentive to the power of God’s works displayed in creation, history, and our personal lives, developing deeper awe and reverence for Him. b. Trusting in God’s Promises: Just as God fulfilled His promises to Israel, we can trust that He will be faithful to His promises for us, finding encouragement that His power is at work leading us toward our inheritance. c. Gratitude and Praise: Like the psalmist, we should respond with gratitude and praise for God’s mighty works, recounting His faithfulness to strengthen our faith and cultivate a heart of thanksgiving.
