Psalms 111:2
The works of the Lord are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.
Psalms 111:2 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 111 is a song of praise that begins with “Praise ye the LORD.” The Hebrew phrase behind this call is “Hallelu Yah,” a joyful summons to worship. The psalmist speaks as part of the gathered people of God, and the whole psalm celebrates the character and deeds of the Lord. This verse stands near the opening, where the writer declares that God’s works are great and worthy of careful attention.
Meaning
The word “great” points to the size, power, and excellence of what God has done. His works include creation, made from nothing by His word, and His daily care for His people. The verse also says these works are “sought out” by those who take pleasure in them. This means believers do not simply notice God’s deeds; they search them out, study them, and reflect on them with delight. The pleasure is not casual interest but a deep joy that leads to eager investigation. Such study is a natural response to the greatness of what God has done.
Biblical connections
The psalm later says that God has made His wonderful works to be remembered (Psalm 111:4). That memory is not passive; it calls for deliberate thought. The miracles of Christ on earth are also among these great works, showing God’s power and compassion. When believers study what God has done, they see His wisdom, righteousness, and faithfulness. This careful reflection leads naturally to worship and trust. The works of God, humbly and diligently sought into, shall all be found just and holy.
Application
Believers are invited to take pleasure in God’s works and to make them a subject of study. This can happen through reading Scripture, observing creation, and remembering answered prayer. Such reflection is not merely intellectual; it shapes the heart and strengthens faith. The psalm concludes that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10), so the study of God’s works is linked to a life of reverence and obedience. As we seek out His deeds, we grow in trust and gratitude.
Reflection
When we look at the greatness of God’s works, we see reasons for praise and confidence. His deeds are honorable, glorious, and righteous, and His righteousness endures forever. Taking time to seek out these works turns our attention from our own concerns to the majesty of God. This verse calls us to be thoughtful worshippers, delighting in what God has done and trusting Him for what He will do.
