Psalms 112:1
Praise ye the Lord. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.
Psalms 112:1 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 112 is a wisdom psalm that teaches practical lessons about living well. It belongs to a group called the Hallelujah Psalms, which run from Psalm 111 through Psalm 118. These psalms call God’s people to praise Him and to trust in His care. The opening word, “Hallelujah,” is a Hebrew word that means “Praise ye the Lord.” It serves as both the title and the main theme of the whole psalm.
Meaning
The psalm begins with a clear call to praise the Lord. This sets the tone for everything that follows. Praise is not just a song we sing; it is a way of life that honors God. The psalmist then declares that the person who fears the Lord is blessed. The fear of the Lord is not a terror that makes us afraid of God. Instead, it is a deep reverence, awe, and respect for His greatness, holiness, and authority. This healthy fear leads to wisdom and a desire to obey God.
The blessed person not only fears the Lord but also delights greatly in His commandments. The word “delight” shows a joyful love for God’s Word, not a grudging duty. Such a person finds happiness and satisfaction in following God’s instructions. The fear of the Lord and delight in His commandments belong together. When we revere God, we recognize His wisdom and goodness. This reverence moves us to embrace His ways with joy, not reluctance.
Biblical connections
The rest of Psalm 112 describes the blessings that come to the one who fears the Lord. These include security, righteousness, and stability in times of trouble. The New Testament shows that Jesus fulfills the law and invites us into a relationship with God based on grace. For believers, the fear of the Lord becomes a reverent awe and love for Jesus Christ. We find our delight in following Him and living by His teachings.
Application
This verse encourages us to examine our own hearts. Are we cultivating a healthy fear of the Lord, recognizing His greatness and submitting to His authority? Do we find delight in His commandments, seeking to align our lives with His Word? True blessedness and fulfillment come from a relationship with God based on reverence and obedience. When we praise God and treasure His commands, we experience the joy and peace that He promises.
Fearing the Lord has both spiritual and practical effects. It shapes our choices, our words, and our trust in God’s provision.
Delighting in God’s commandments turns obedience into a source of joy rather than a burden.
Reflection
Consider what it means to delight greatly in God’s commandments. This is not a passive feeling but an active choice to love and follow His Word. As we read the whole chapter of Psalm 112, we see that the one who fears the Lord is blessed in every area of life. Let us respond by praising the Lord and asking Him to give us a heart that delights in His ways.
