Psalms 143:8

Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.

Psalms 143:8 (KJV)

Psalm 143 is a lament of David, written while he faced deep distress. He cries out to God for help, and in this verse he asks for two things: to hear God’s lovingkindness and to know the way to walk. The verse has two parallel petitions, each with a reason.

David asks God to “cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning.” This hearing is not just outward, but inward, by the Spirit, so that he feels and perceives God’s mercy. The Hebrew word for lovingkindness is chesed, which means God’s loyal, covenant love. David wants to experience this steadfast love at the start of the day, as a source of hope. His reason is “for in thee do I trust.” Trust is the foundation of his request; he seeks to feel the reality of the God in whom he has placed his confidence.

Then David prays, “cause me to know the way wherein I should walk.” This is a plea for practical guidance in daily life. He does not ask for a map of the future, but for the next step. His reason is “for I lift up my soul unto thee.” This phrase shows total dependence and devotion, offering his whole being to God. Surrender opens the door for God’s direction.

This verse connects to the pattern of beginning the day with God. In Lamentations 3:22-23, God’s mercies are new every morning, which echoes David’s request for morning lovingkindness. Trust and surrender are the proper responses to God’s faithful love.

  • Seek to hear and experience God’s lovingkindness each morning. His love provides comfort and strength for the day.

  • Place your trust in God, especially in hard times. He is faithful and able to sustain you.

  • Ask God for guidance in your daily walk. He gives wisdom to discern the right path.

  • Lift up your soul to God in surrender. This demonstrates your complete reliance on His will and opens the way for His intervention.

David’s prayer models a life of dependence. He does not rely on his own strength or understanding. Instead, he turns to God for both assurance and direction. When we trust and surrender, we can face each day with hope, knowing that God’s lovingkindness is new every morning and that He will guide our steps.
