Luke 1:34
“Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?”
Context:This verse is a part of the account of the Annunciation, where the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and announced that she would conceive a child who would be the Son of God. Mary’s response in this verse reflects her confusion and inquiry regarding the miraculous nature of this event.
To understand the significance of Luke 1:34, it is important to consider the context of the passage. Prior to this verse, Gabriel had greeted Mary, saying, “Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women” (Luke 1:28, KJV). Gabriel then proceeded to inform Mary that she would conceive a child by the power of the Holy Spirit, and the child would be called Jesus (Luke 1:31).
Mary’s response in verse 34 reveals her humble and questioning nature. She acknowledges that she has not been intimate with a man, which indicates her awareness that the natural process of conception is not possible in her current circumstances. Her question expresses a genuine perplexity about how this extraordinary event could occur.
Mary’s query demonstrates her faith in God’s power and a desire to understand the unfolding of His plan. It reveals her willingness to seek clarification and her trust in the messenger of God. Rather than dismissing the angel’s words as impossible, she seeks an explanation, which shows her openness to the miraculous and her willingness to submit to God’s will.
Gabriel provides an answer in Luke 1:35, saying, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” Gabriel’s response assures Mary that the conception will be a miraculous work of the Holy Spirit.
Luke 1:34 serves as a reminder of Mary’s humanity and her faith-filled response to the divine call upon her life. It highlights her obedience, trust, and willingness to surrender her plans to fulfill God’s purpose. Mary’s question exemplifies the type of genuine inquiry and seeking of understanding that can be beneficial in our own spiritual journeys.
In summary, Luke 1:34 captures Mary’s initial response to the angel Gabriel’s announcement regarding her miraculous conception. Her question reflects her humble inquiry about the mechanics of this event, while also displaying her faith and willingness to surrender to God’s plan.
