John 8:38

I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.

John 8:38 (KJV)

John 8:38 is part of a larger conversation Jesus had with the Jews in the temple. In this dialogue, Jesus reveals His divine nature and His relationship with the Father. He proclaims that He speaks what He has seen with His Father, contrasting it with what the Jews have seen with their father.

Jesus’ relationship with the Father is the foundation of His words. He speaks from direct, intimate knowledge of the Father’s will and teachings, not from human doctrine. This assertion emphasizes His role as the revealer of divine truth, received in the Father’s presence.

Jesus contrasts what He has seen with the Father with what the Jews have seen with their father. By “your father,” Jesus is referring to the devil, as He later reveals in John 8:44. The Jews’ actions and beliefs align with the devil’s agenda, standing in stark contrast to the truth Jesus speaks from the Father.

Jesus’ claim to speak from what He has seen with the Father is consistent with His later statement that He came from the Father (John 16:28). This reinforces His divine origin and the authority of His teaching.

This verse underscores the need for spiritual discernment. Jesus implies that the Jews were unable to discern the truth because they were following the wrong spiritual father. Our spiritual perception and understanding are shaped by our relationship with God. Only when we align ourselves with God, through Jesus Christ, can we grasp the truth and discern His will.

As believers, we should strive to develop a close relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Through prayer, studying the Scriptures, and cultivating a heart of obedience, we can grow in our understanding of God’s will. Like Jesus, we should strive to speak and act in accordance with the Father’s teachings. It is crucial to discern the sources of influence in our lives, ensuring that we are not being led astray by worldly values or the enemy’s deceptions.

John 8:38 encourages us to walk in the truth and reject the lies of the enemy. By aligning ourselves with God, we can have the assurance that we are following the true Father and speaking and living according to His will.

Examining the context, cross-referencing related verses, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit help us gain a deeper understanding of God’s Word and its application to our lives.
