John 17:6

This verse is part of Jesus’ prayer to the Father in what is commonly known as the “High Priestly Prayer.” In this prayer, Jesus intercedes on behalf of His disciples and reveals important truths about His mission, their relationship, and the purpose of their lives.

Throughout His ministry, Jesus revealed God’s nature, character, and will to His disciples. He showed them the Father’s love, mercy, righteousness, and truth through His words, actions, and miracles. Jesus was the perfect representation of God on earth (John 1:14, 18).

The chosen ones:

Jesus acknowledges that the disciples were given to Him by the Father: “thine they were, and thou gavest them me.” Jesus recognized that the disciples were not randomly chosen but were entrusted to Him by God. They were chosen by God’s sovereign will to be Jesus’ followers and to carry out His mission on earth. This statement also emphasizes the divine providence in selecting and preparing individuals for specific purposes.

Keeping God’s Word:

The last part of the verse states, “and they have kept thy word.” Jesus commends His disciples for their faithfulness to God’s Word. The disciples had listened to Jesus’ teachings, obeyed His commandments, and internalized the truth He shared with them. Their response demonstrated their genuine faith and commitment to following God’s instructions.
