Hebrews 7:26

For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

Hebrews 7:26 (KJV)

The book of Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and tempted to return to their former Jewish religious practices. The author presents Jesus Christ as the ultimate High Priest, superior to the Levitical priesthood, and emphasises His role in our salvation.

The phrase “became us” means that Jesus is suitable and fitting for our needs. He answers to our case and necessities as sinners who need a perfect mediator. The Greek term for high priest, ἀρχιερεύς (archiereus), points to His official role as the one who intercedes before God on our behalf.

Jesus is described as holy, signifying His complete moral purity and separation from sin. Unlike earthly high priests who were sinners and had to offer sacrifices for their own sins, Jesus is perfect and blameless. His holiness is by nature—original, complete, internal and external—far exceeding that of any earthly priest.

He is harmless, meaning without malice, innocent, and without the desire to harm others. He came to bring peace, healing, and salvation to humanity. He is also undefiled, untainted by sin and completely pure. This qualifies Him to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins, for only an unblemished sacrifice could atone for the sins of humanity.

Jesus is separate from sinners. While He interacted with sinners during His earthly ministry, He Himself was without sin. This does not mean He isolated Himself from sinners, but that He remained without sin even while in their midst. Finally, He has been made higher than the heavens, indicating His exalted position and superiority over all creation. As the Son of God, He is above all things and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

This verse summarises the superiority of Jesus over the Levitical priesthood. Earthly high priests were sinners who needed to offer sacrifices for themselves, but Jesus is sinless and perfectly suited to intercede for us. His exaltation above the heavens fulfils the Old Testament pattern of the high priest entering the holy of holies, yet He does so in the true heavenly sanctuary.

Hebrews 7:26 assures believers that we have a High Priest who is exactly what we need—holy, blameless, pure, and exalted. Because Jesus is holy, harmless, undefiled, and separate from sinners, we can approach God with confidence. He is the perfect mediator between God and humanity, offering salvation and eternal life to all who trust in Him. We can find comfort and assurance in His finished work, knowing that He ever lives to intercede for us.

Consider the greatness of our High Priest. He is not like the priests of old who needed to offer sacrifices for their own sins. Jesus is holy, harmless, undefiled, and separate from sinners. He has been made higher than the heavens. How does this truth deepen your trust in Him today?
