Revelation 9:4

“And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.”

Context:The Book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and prophetic book that contains visions and messages given to the Apostle John. It unveils the future events surrounding the second coming of Jesus Christ and the establishment of God’s eternal kingdom.

Locust-like Creatures:In the preceding verses of Revelation 9, the fifth angel sounds his trumpet, and John sees a star fall from heaven to the earth. This star represents an angel who is given the key to the bottomless pit. When the pit is opened, smoke arises, darkening the sun and the air. Then, locust-like creatures are released from the pit, which are granted power to torment people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

Symbolic Interpretation:The locust-like creatures in this passage are symbolic, representing a demonic force or an army of evil beings. Their purpose is to inflict torment upon those who do not have the seal of God. The mention of not harming the grass, green things, or trees suggests that their destruction is targeted specifically at people rather than the natural environment.

The Seal of God:The seal of God mentioned in Revelation 9:4 refers to a spiritual mark or identification given to believers. In other parts of the Bible, such as Ephesians 1:13 and 4:30, the seal of the Holy Spirit is mentioned as a mark of ownership, security, and salvation for those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ. The seal of God signifies the protection and belonging of believers in contrast to those who do not have it.

Spiritual Application:This passage highlights the significance of having the seal of God. It emphasizes the spiritual distinction between those who belong to God and those who do not. It reminds believers of the security and protection they have in Christ. It also serves as a reminder of the consequences for those who reject God’s offer of salvation and choose to align themselves with the forces of evil.

  • Message of Hope:Although this passage speaks of impending judgment and torment, it also points to the mercy and grace of God. The fact that there is a distinction between those with the seal of God and those without implies that God’s desire is for people to be saved and protected. It is a call for individuals to turn to God, receive His seal, and find refuge in Him.

In conclusion, Revelation 9:4 portrays a vivid prophetic scene where locust-like creatures are released to torment those who do not have the seal of God. It serves as a reminder of the spiritual battle between good and evil, the importance of having the seal of God, and the need for individuals to turn to God for salvation and protection.
