Mark Chapter 14

Summery

Mark 14 depicts the events leading up to Jesus’ arrest and betrayal. The chapter begins with Jesus being anointed with expensive ointment by a woman at the house of Simon the leper. Some of the disciples express disapproval, but Jesus defends her, acknowledging her act as a preparation for His burial.

The narrative then shifts to the Last Supper, where Jesus shares the Passover meal with His disciples. During this significant event, Jesus foretells that one among them will betray Him. This news distresses the disciples, and each one questions if he could be the betrayer.

Later, Jesus goes to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray, taking Peter, James, and John with Him. He expresses His deep anguish and asks them to watch and pray. However, they fall asleep multiple times, unaware of the imminent events.

Judas arrives with a group of people armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests. He identifies Jesus by giving Him a kiss, fulfilling the prophecy. The disciples react with confusion and briefly attempt to defend Jesus, but He willingly surrenders Himself to the authorities.

The chapter concludes with Jesus’ arrest and the scattering of His disciples. It sets the stage for the trials and crucifixion that follow in the subsequent chapters.
