An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.

Context

Proverbs is wisdom literature in the Old Testament, traditionally attributed to King Solomon. It gives practical guidance for living wisely and righteously. In Proverbs 21:4 the writer names three things as sin: a haughty look, a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked.

Meaning

The phrase “a high look” describes an arrogant face or eyes that look down on others. “A proud heart” points to an inner attitude of self-importance and rebellion against God. Together they show that pride is both outward and inward. Scripture often condemns pride because it lifts the self above God and others, and it becomes the root of many other sins.

The word “plowing” may also be translated as “lamp” or “light.” If it means “lamp,” then even the best deeds of the wicked are sin because they are not done in faith or for God’s glory. If it means “plowing,” then even their ordinary, necessary work is tainted by sin. Either way, the point is clear: apart from a heart submitted to God, even good-looking activities are sinful.

Biblical connections

Proverbs 16:18 warns that “pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 6:16-17 lists “a proud look” among the things the Lord hates. These verses agree that God opposes the proud and calls His people to humility.

Application

Guard against pride by examining your heart and attitudes. Do not let success or ability make you look down on others. Instead, remember that every good thing comes from God.

Seek righteousness by aligning your thoughts and actions with Scripture. Avoid the ways of the wicked, and strive to honor God in all you do.

Examine your motives daily. Ask whether your actions come from selfish ambition or from a desire to please God and serve others. Be quick to repent when self-interest is revealed.

Depend on God’s grace for transformation. Overcoming pride and wickedness requires the Holy Spirit’s power to change your heart, enabling you to live in humility and righteousness.

This verse calls you to look beyond outward behavior and consider the condition of your heart. Even your best efforts are acceptable to God only when they come from a humble, faithful heart. Let this truth lead you to daily dependence on Him, for He alone can sustain a right spirit within you.
