Psalms 112:5

“A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.”

Context:Psalm 112 is a wisdom psalm, which celebrates the blessings and righteousness of the upright or the “righteous man.” It emphasizes the rewards and benefits of living a godly life, highlighting the characteristics and actions of the righteous.

The Character of a Good Man:The verse begins by describing the character of a good man or a righteous person. The term “good” in this context signifies moral uprightness, integrity, and devotion to God. It implies a person who follows God’s commandments and seeks to do what is right in His sight.

Showing Favor and Lending:The verse highlights two specific actions of a good man. First, it mentions that a good man “sheweth favour.” This refers to the righteous person showing kindness, compassion, and generosity towards others. They are inclined to extend help, support, and favor to those in need, demonstrating the love of God through their actions.

Second, it says that a good man “lendeth.” This implies the willingness of the righteous to lend money or resources to those who require assistance. The righteous person understands the importance of stewardship and recognizes that lending can be an act of mercy, enabling others to meet their needs or overcome financial challenges.

Guiding Affairs with Discretion:The verse concludes by stating that the good man will “guide his affairs with discretion.” This phrase emphasizes the wisdom and prudence exercised by the righteous person in managing their own matters. It implies that the righteous exercise careful judgment, making wise decisions in various aspects of life, including financial matters, relationships, and other responsibilities.

By employing discretion, the righteous person seeks God’s guidance, considers the consequences of their actions, and makes choices that align with godly principles. This attribute of discretion ensures that their decisions are not driven by impulsive or self-centered motives but are grounded in righteousness and wisdom.

Overall Message:Psalm 112:5 encourages believers to live a righteous life characterized by kindness, generosity, and discretion. It highlights the importance of helping others and being responsible stewards of the resources entrusted to us. The verse reminds us that our actions should reflect the love and character of God, impacting not only our own lives but also positively influencing those around us.
