Psalms 126:6
He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtlesse come againe with reioycing: bringing his sheaues with him. Psalms 126:6 (KJV)
Psalm 126:6 is a psalm of ascent, traditionally sung by the Israelites as they travelled to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. It contains themes of restoration, joy, and hope. Verse 6, in particular, highlights the promise of reward for those who sow with tears.
The Act of Going Forth: The verse begins with the phrase “He that goeth forth.” This phrase can be interpreted as someone stepping out in faith, taking action, and moving forward. It implies a sense of purpose and determination. It speaks to the importance of not remaining stagnant but actively engaging in life’s endeavours.
The Experience of Weeping: The psalmist describes the one who goes forth as weeping. This represents the hardships, challenges, and trials that individuals may encounter while pursuing their goals. Weeping can symbolize sorrow, pain, or distress. It acknowledges that life is not always easy, and there may be seasons of difficulty.
Bearing Precious Seed: The individual who goes forth is also described as “bearing precious seed.” This metaphorical language refers to agricultural sowing, representing the effort and investment put into a particular endeavour. In the context of Psalm 126, this reflects the Israelites’ labor in rebuilding Jerusalem and Judah after exile, as seen in verses 1–3. Bearing seed can also be understood as spreading the message of God’s Word, carrying the gospel to others, emphasizing the importance of sowing and investing in something valuable.
The Promise of Reward: The verse continues by stating that those who go forth and weep, bearing precious seed, will “doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” This promise assures that their efforts will not be in vain. The imagery of “coming again with rejoicing” and “returning with joy” portrays a future state of happiness, joy, and fulfillment, indicating a bountiful return or reward for their labour and perseverance.
Overall, Psalm 126:6 encourages believers to have faith and take action, even in the midst of challenging circumstances. It reminds us that our tears and hardships can lead to a fruitful outcome. It teaches us to trust in God’s promises and the assurance that our efforts will ultimately yield blessings and rejoicing.
