Psalms 146:3

Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.

Psalms 146:3 (KJV)

Psalm 146 is a psalm of praise, beginning and ending with the call to praise the Lord. The psalmist contrasts trust in fallible human rulers with trust in the faithful God. This verse gives a direct command: do not place your ultimate confidence in princes, meaning human leaders, rulers, or those in positions of power.

The phrase “nor in the son of man” is a Hebrew way of saying any mortal human being. The words “in whom there is no help” show that people, however powerful, cannot provide ultimate salvation or deliverance. This does not forbid honoring or respecting leaders; it redirects our deepest dependence to God alone. Human leaders are fallible and limited, but God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and unchanging. The command is not a rejection of human authority but a call to place our hope in the One who never fails.

The surrounding verses, Psalms 146:5-9, describe God as the Creator, the keeper of truth, the executor of justice, the provider for the hungry, the liberator of prisoners, the healer of the blind, the lifter of the bowed down, the lover of the righteous, the protector of strangers, and the sustainer of orphans and widows. This contrast shows that God’s help is certain, while human help is fleeting. The verse also points to the ultimate fulfillment of trust in God through Christ, the true King, in whom salvation is found.

  • This verse reminds us to keep our perspective right. While we may respect and follow leaders, we must not idolize them or place undue reliance on them. Human leaders are fallible and subject to error, but God is perfect and dependable. Therefore, our ultimate trust should be in Him. We can seek guidance from His Word, pray for His wisdom, and rely on His promises. By doing so, we find true help and security.

Trusting God does not mean withdrawing from civic life. It means our hope and security rest in God, not in human institutions. When we face uncertainty, we can remember that God is faithful and able to help in every situation. His help is not limited or conditional. He is capable of providing the support we need in every aspect of life. Because God is eternal and sovereign, His help never runs out, and His care never fails.
