Psalms 16:7
“I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.”
Psalm 16:7 (KJV) says: “I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.”
Context:
Psalm 16 is attributed to David and is classified as a Miktam, which means a golden or precious Psalm. It is a personal expression of trust and confidence in God’s protection and provision. In this particular verse, David acknowledges the Lord’s counsel and guidance in his life, even during the night seasons.
Acknowledging God’s Counsel:
David begins by declaring his intention to bless the Lord. The act of blessing here can be understood as an expression of praise and gratitude towards God. David acknowledges that the Lord has given him counsel. This implies that David recognizes the source of his wisdom and guidance is from God Himself. As a wise and experienced king, David acknowledges that his success and ability to make sound decisions come from God’s counsel.
Divine Guidance:
The phrase “my reins also instruct me in the night seasons” refers to God’s guidance and instruction, even during the darkest and most challenging times. In biblical language, the reins were often associated with the innermost being or the seat of one’s emotions, thoughts, and desires. David is expressing that even in the darkest moments of his life, when he may have been wrestling with his thoughts and emotions, God’s instruction and guidance were with him.
Application:
- Psalm 16:7 encourages us to seek God’s counsel and trust in His guidance in every aspect of our lives. Just as David recognised God’s wisdom and direction, we should also acknowledge that our own wisdom is limited. When faced with decisions, challenges, or difficult times, we can turn to God for guidance. We can seek His counsel through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking wise counsel from fellow believers.
Furthermore, the mention of God’s instruction in the night seasons reminds us that God’s guidance is not limited to the daytime or the times when everything seems clear. He is with us even in the darkest moments, providing wisdom and clarity when we need it the most.
