Psalms 37:40

Posted on 18 May at 15:17

“And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.”

This verse is from Psalm 37, a psalm attributed to King David. It is a wisdom psalm that provides guidance on how to live a righteous life in the face of wickedness and the prosperity of evildoers.

In verse 40, David declares the assurance of God’s help and deliverance for those who trust in Him. Let’s break down the verse and explore its key themes:

Divine Assistance:“And the LORD shall help them.” This phrase emphasizes that God Himself will come to the aid of those who seek Him. The Almighty is not distant or unconcerned but actively involved in the lives of His people. This promise gives hope and assurance that we can rely on God’s help in times of trouble.

Deliverance from the Wicked:“And deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked.” God’s deliverance is not limited to a mere assistance but extends to a complete rescue from the wicked. The psalmist acknowledges that the wicked may flourish temporarily, but their ultimate fate is in God’s hands. He has the power to deliver His people from the influence, harm, and schemes of the wicked.

Salvation through Trust:“And save them because they trust in him.” Trusting in God is the key to experiencing His deliverance and salvation. It implies complete reliance and dependence on Him, acknowledging His sovereignty and wisdom. When we trust in the Lord, we surrender our worries, fears, and doubts to Him, recognizing that He is our ultimate source of help and salvation.

This verse serves as a reminder to the readers of the psalm and to believers today that God is faithful and trustworthy. It encourages us to place our trust in Him, knowing that He will help, deliver, and save us from the wickedness of the world. However, it is essential to note that this does not guarantee a life without challenges or hardships. Rather, it assures us that God is with us and will guide us through those difficulties when we place our trust in Him.

By studying and reflecting on this verse, we are encouraged to cultivate a deeper trust in God and to rely on His help and deliverance. It reminds us that even in the midst of a world filled with wickedness, we can find refuge and security in the Lord.
