Revelation 12:12

Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

Revelation 12:12 (KJV)

Revelation is a book of prophecy written by the apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. It contains a series of visions that reveal the future and the ultimate triumph of God over evil. Revelation 12 provides a symbolic description of the cosmic battle between the forces of good and evil.

The verse begins with a call for the heavens and those dwelling in them to rejoice. This rejoicing in heaven signifies the victory and triumph of God over the forces of evil. It emphasises the ultimate sovereignty and power of God. The angels in heaven are depicted as rejoicing at every advance of Christ’s kingdom, and this joy is tied to the progress of God’s redemptive plan.

Following the call for rejoicing, there is a warning or woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea. This signifies that those living on earth will experience trouble, distress, and woe because of the actions of the devil. The verse states that the devil has come down to the earth with great wrath. This represents a spiritual conflict or battle that intensifies as the end times draw near. The devil, also known as Satan, is described as having great anger or fury because he knows that his time is limited.

The devil’s knowledge of having a short time refers to the limited duration he has before his ultimate defeat. This suggests that as the end of the age approaches, the devil will increase his efforts to deceive, tempt, and oppose the work of God on earth. His wrath is a response to his limited time, indicating a period of intense but temporary persecution.

This verse is a transition in the apocalyptic vision, shifting from the heavenly perspective to an earthly warning. It contrasts the security of heaven with the peril of the earth, urging believers to find hope in God’s ultimate control despite the devil’s fury.

Overall, Revelation 12:12 portrays a contrast between the rejoicing in heaven and the woe experienced by those living on earth. It highlights the spiritual battle between God and the devil, with the devil intensifying his efforts in the last days. However, the verse also serves as a reminder of God’s ultimate victory over evil and the hope believers can find in Him.

Believers can take comfort in knowing that, though the devil’s wrath is real and his time is short, God’s sovereignty remains unchallenged. The call to rejoice in heaven assures us that the outcome is already determined, and we can live with hope and confidence in God’s ultimate triumph.
