1 Chronicles 29:18

O Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this for ever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of thy people, and prepare their heart unto thee:

Context

King David spoke this prayer as the people of Israel willingly gave their treasures for building the temple in Jerusalem. This was a solemn moment of dedication, when the nation rejoiced in giving to the Lord. David stood before the whole assembly and blessed God, then prayed for the people’s hearts to remain devoted.

Meaning

David addressed God as “O Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers.” By naming the patriarchs, he recalled the covenant God made with them and their descendants. This showed that God’s faithfulness had continued through many generations, and David trusted that same God to work in his own day.

The first request was that God would “keep this for ever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of thy people.” The word “imagination” here means the mind’s frame or purpose, not mere fantasy. David asked God to sustain the people’s inward devotion, so that their willing hearts would not grow cold. He knew that true worship begins in the heart, and only God can preserve it.

The second request was that God would “prepare their heart unto thee.” This means to establish, direct, and fix the heart toward God. David understood that people cannot make themselves loyal by their own strength. He asked God to shape their hearts so they would remain true to Him.

Biblical connections

In the next verse, David prayed for Solomon, asking God to give him a loyal heart to keep His commandments and build the temple. This shows that the same need for a prepared heart applied to the king as well as to the people. The chapter ends with the people blessing God and bowing in worship, which was the fruit of a heart that God had prepared.

Application

This verse teaches that God is the initiator and sustainer of true devotion. Believers should pray for God to keep their hearts steadfast and directed toward Him, especially after times of joyful giving or worship. It is wise to ask God to guard the inner thoughts and desires that lead to obedience.

Reflection

David’s prayer reminds us that a heart fully given to God is a gift from God. When we sense our devotion fading, we can pray the same words, asking the Lord to keep our hearts and prepare them for His service.
