2 Chronicles 24 tells the story of Joash, who becomes king of Judah at the age of seven and reigns for forty years. In the beginning, Joash follows the instructions of the high priest Jehoiada, who helps him restore the temple of the Lord and renew the worship of God in Judah. The people willingly contribute to the repairs, and the temple is successfully restored.
However, after Jehoiada's death, Joash is influenced by the officials of Judah and turns away from the Lord. He allows idol worship and even orders the stoning of Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada, who had rebuked the king and the people for their unfaithfulness.
As a consequence of his rebellion against God, Joash experiences military defeat and is eventually assassinated by his own servants. His son, Amaziah, becomes the next king of Judah.
