Matthew 27 recounts the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion and the aftermath of his death. Judas, filled with remorse after betraying Jesus, returns the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders before hanging himself. The religious leaders decide to use the money to buy the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers. Jesus is brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, who questions him but finds no fault in him. However, to appease the crowd, Pilate releases Barabbas, a notorious prisoner, and orders Jesus to be crucified.
Jesus is mocked and beaten by the Roman soldiers, who crown him with thorns and dress him in a scarlet robe. He is then led to Golgotha, where he is crucified between two thieves. While hanging on the cross, Jesus is ridiculed by the onlookers, and even the religious leaders mock his claim of being the Son of God. Darkness covers the land for three hours, and at the ninth hour, Jesus cries out and gives up his spirit.
The moment of Jesus’ death is accompanied by several supernatural events, including an earthquake, the tearing of the temple veil, and the resurrection of many saints who appear to many in Jerusalem. The Roman centurion and the soldiers guarding Jesus are struck with fear and acknowledge him as the Son of God.
