Psalms 72:17
His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.
Psalms 72:17 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 72 is a royal psalm attributed to King Solomon. It prays for the king’s righteous rule and prosperity, while also pointing beyond any earthly ruler to the promised Messiah. This verse closes the psalm with a vision of an everlasting name and worldwide blessing.
Meaning
The enduring name means more than fame. It speaks of the king’s office and kingdom continuing forever, as long as the sun itself. In the ancient world, a name carried a person’s reputation and authority. Here, the name of the promised king will never fade or be forgotten.
“Men shall be blessed in him” shows that this king becomes the channel of blessing for others. The phrase “all nations shall call him blessed” reveals the universal reach of his reign. Every people group will recognise his goodness and rejoice in him.
Biblical connections
This verse is a Messianic prophecy. Its fullest meaning appears in Jesus Christ, whose throne endures forever and whose kingdom has no end. Through him, the blessing promised to Abraham reaches all nations, as the Gospel goes to every people. His name continues in himself, not through earthly successors.
Application
Believers can trust that Christ’s kingdom is eternal. Even when earthly powers rise and fall, his rule remains unshaken. We join the nations in calling him blessed, and we find our own blessing in him. His name is preserved and proclaimed despite every attempt to dim its glory.
Reflection
How does the certainty of Christ’s endless reign shape your daily hope? Let this verse turn your heart toward the King whose name outlasts the sun, and who gladly shares his blessing with all who come to him.
