Listen to this article

“There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.”

Psalms 72:16 (KJV) states:“There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.”

Historical Context:Psalm 72 is attributed to King Solomon and is considered a royal psalm. It is believed to be a prayer for the righteous rule of the king and the prosperity of the nation. The psalm reflects Solomon’s desire for a just and righteous kingdom, characterized by peace, justice, and prosperity.

  • Symbolic Interpretation:
  • Handful of Corn:The phrase “handful of corn” symbolizes abundance and prosperity. Corn (or grain) was an essential staple in the ancient world, representing sustenance and fertility. It signifies the provision and blessing that comes from God’s abundance.
  • Mountains:The mention of “mountains” symbolizes stability, strength, and elevation. In the Bible, mountains often represent a place of encountering God, His majesty, and His sovereignty.
  • Fruit Shaking like Lebanon:Lebanon was known for its majestic and abundant cedar trees. The phrase “fruit shaking like Lebanon” implies an abundant harvest that is abundant and plentiful. It signifies a time of great productivity, prosperity, and blessing.
  • City Flourishing like Grass:The flourishing of the city, likened to the grass of the earth, speaks of prosperity, growth, and vitality. Just as grass covers the ground, indicating new life and fertility, the city will experience a season of prosperity and flourishing.

Spiritual Application:

  • Abundance and Provision:The handful of corn and the shaking fruit symbolize God’s abundant provision and blessing upon the people. It reminds us that when we trust in God and follow His ways, He will meet our needs and bless us abundantly.
  • Stability and Strength:The mention of mountains highlights the stability and strength that come from a kingdom rooted in God’s principles. Just as mountains are unmovable, a nation built on God’s wisdom and righteousness will be steadfast and secure.
  • Prosperity and Growth:The image of the city flourishing like grass emphasizes the prosperity and growth that arise when a society operates in harmony with God’s values. It points to the blessings that come from righteous leadership, justice, and a community that honors God.

Remember that the Psalms contain poetic language, often rich in imagery and metaphor. While this study provides an interpretation of Psalms 72:16, it is essential to seek further study, prayer, and meditation to gain a deeper understanding of God’s Word.
