Proverbs 6:16
“These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him.”
Understanding the Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings attributed to King Solomon, known for his wisdom. In this particular verse, Solomon lists six things that the Lord hates and adds a seventh that is an abomination to Him. The purpose of this verse is to provide guidance and instruction regarding behaviours that are detestable to God.
The Six Things the Lord Hates:a) A Proud Look: God despises pride and arrogance. Pride is the root of many sins and hinders humility, which is essential for a proper relationship with God and others.
b) A Lying Tongue: God values truthfulness and despises falsehood. Lying goes against God’s nature and character.
c) Hands That Shed Innocent Blood: God is the giver and sustainer of life. Taking the life of an innocent person is a grave sin in His eyes.
d) A Heart That Devises Wicked Plans: God examines the intentions and motivations of our hearts. He detests those who plan and scheme evil against others.
e) Feet That Are Swift in Running to Mischief: God dislikes those who eagerly rush into sinful actions, seeking to cause harm or trouble.
f) A False Witness Who Speaks Lies: God values justice and truth. Bearing false witness or giving dishonest testimony is a serious offense.
The Seventh Abomination:g) One Who Sows Discord Among Brethren: God desires unity and love among His people. Someone who intentionally sows division, conflict, and discord among believers is an abomination to Him.
Lessons and Application:
- Humility:We should strive to cultivate humility in our lives, avoiding pride and arrogance.
- Truthfulness:We must be people of integrity, speaking the truth and avoiding deceit and lies.
- Valuing Life:We should respect and protect the sanctity of human life, treating others with love and compassion.
- Goodness of Heart:Our thoughts and intentions should be pure and focused on what is good and pleasing to God.
- Avoiding Sinful Actions:We must refrain from rushing into mischief or participating in activities that harm others.
- Honesty in Speech:We should always speak truthfully and avoid spreading falsehoods or giving false testimony.
- Promoting Unity:Instead of causing division, we should work towards fostering unity, peace, and love within the body of Christ.
It is important to remember that these verses highlight behaviours that are displeasing to God. As believers, we are called to love and strive for righteousness, relying on the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit to transform us.
