Ezra Chapter 6

Summery

Chapter 6 of the Book of Ezra in the King James Version (KJV) tells the story of the decree of King Darius, which confirmed the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. After opposition and a period of suspension in the construction, the prophets Haggai and Zechariah encouraged the people to resume the work.

In this chapter, we learn that Darius found a scroll containing a decree by King Cyrus, who initially allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple. Upon reading it, Darius not only affirmed the decree but also ordered its execution. He instructed the local authorities to support the Jewish people in their efforts, providing them with whatever resources were necessary. Darius further declared that anyone who hindered the temple's reconstruction would face severe consequences.

The chapter concludes by reporting that the Jews worked diligently and completed the temple according to the commandments of God, just as Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes had decreed. They dedicated the temple with joy, offering sacrifices and celebrating the Passover.
