Psalms 147:1

Praise ye the Lord: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely.

Context

Psalm 147 belongs to the final collection of Psalms, chapters 146 through 150, often called the Hallelujah Psalms because they begin and end with the call to praise the Lord. This psalm is a song of thanksgiving for God’s provision, restoration, and sovereign care. The surrounding verses show God building up Jerusalem, gathering the outcasts of Israel, healing the brokenhearted, and binding up their wounds. He also numbers the stars and calls them by name. These mighty acts give the people many reasons to praise Him.

Meaning

The verse opens with the Hebrew word “Hallelujah,” which means “Praise the Lord.” This is not a suggestion but a joyful command to God’s people. The psalmist gives three reasons why praise is right. First, it is good to sing praises unto our God. Singing praise is good because God commands it, approves it, and uses it for our good. It is also profitable for us, turning our hearts toward Him and reminding us of His faithfulness.

Second, praise is pleasant. It brings joy and delight to the worshiper and is pleasing to God when offered from a grateful heart. When we sing with grace in our hearts, we experience His presence in a tangible way. Third, praise is comely, meaning it is fitting and beautiful. Praise is the natural response to God’s character and works. It is the reasonable service of His redeemed people, and it is a beautiful sight when they sing of His love.

Psalm 92:1 makes a similar declaration, reinforcing that praise is not a burden but a joyful duty. The goodness of praise is rooted in God’s own nature; He is worthy of all honor. When we praise Him, we align ourselves with His will and join the whole creation in glorifying Him.
