Psalms 25:12
What man is he that feareth the Lord? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.
Psalms 25:12 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 25 is a prayer of David, the king of Israel. In it, he asks God for guidance, mercy, and deliverance, while honestly admitting his own sins and weaknesses. This verse sits within that prayer as a promise about the person who fears the Lord.
Meaning
The verse opens with a question: “What man is he that feareth the LORD?” The fear of the Lord is not terror or dread. It is reverential awe, deep respect, and humble submission to God’s greatness, holiness, and authority. This fear shows itself in humility, obedience, love for God, trust in Him, carefulness not to offend Him, and hatred of sin. Such fear is the beginning of wisdom and leads to a happy life.
The second half of the verse makes a promise: “him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.” God Himself becomes the teacher of the one who fears Him. This teaching is not limited to religious rituals. It covers all of life, including decisions, behavior, and daily choices. God’s guidance is personal and specific. He directs the individual in the path He has chosen for that person. The verse does not spell out the exact nature of that way, but it emphasizes that God chooses it. His wisdom is sovereign, and His choice is good.
The promise is conditional. The condition is the fear of the Lord. The result is divine instruction and wisdom. The believer’s part is to revere God; God’s part is to teach and lead. This gives comfort and assurance that God is actively involved in the lives of those who honor Him. He provides clarity and insight for their choices.
Biblical connections
The next verse, Psalm 25:14, says that the secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant. This reinforces the intimate relationship between fearing God and receiving His guidance. God shares His heart with the humble, not with the proud. The broader psalm also shows David seeking God’s instruction, which matches the promise here.
Application
Examine your heart: Do you truly fear the Lord? Cultivate a genuine reverence that surrenders your will to His authority and seeks to please Him in all things.
Develop a teachable spirit: Those who fear the Lord are taught by Him. Be humble and willing to learn from God’s Word, His Spirit, and godly mentors. Accept correction and guidance.
Trust God’s chosen way: God’s way may not match your own plans. As you trust Him, He will lead you in paths that are best for you, even when they seem difficult or unclear.
Treasure the relationship: This verse points to the close bond between the one who fears God and God Himself. He desires to guide, teach, and shape His people as they walk in obedience.
Reflection
Psalm 25:12 calls you to a life of reverent trust. When you fear the Lord, you open the door to His personal instruction. He chooses the way, and He promises to teach you in it. Rest in that promise, and let it shape how you live each day.
