2 Kings Chapter 4

Summery

2 Kings 4 tells the story of Elisha and his miraculous acts. In the first part, a widow of one of Elisha's followers comes to him seeking help as creditors are threatening to take her two sons as slaves. Elisha asks her what she has in her house, and she reveals she only has a small jar of oil. He instructs her to gather empty vessels from her neighbors and pour the oil into them. Miraculously, the oil keeps flowing until all the vessels are filled, allowing her to sell the oil and pay off her debts.

The chapter then shifts to a story about a wealthy woman from Shunem who provides hospitality to Elisha, even building a room for him to stay in whenever he visits. Elisha is grateful for her kindness and asks what he can do for her in return. Elisha's servant, Gehazi, informs Elisha that the woman has no child, so Elisha promises that she will have a son within the year. True to his word, the woman gives birth to a son.

Years later, the son suddenly becomes ill and dies in his mother's arms. The woman rushes to find Elisha, who returns with her to the boy's room. Elisha prays to God, lies on top of the boy, and breathes life into him, miraculously reviving him.
