Jeremiah 42 depicts a significant turning point in the lives of the remnant left in Judah after the Babylonian invasion. Faced with the fear of retribution from the Babylonians, the remnant seeks guidance from the prophet Jeremiah. They ask him to inquire of God on their behalf, promising to follow His instructions. Jeremiah agrees and promises to deliver God’s message faithfully.
After ten days, Jeremiah returns with God’s response. He relays the message that if the remnant stays in Judah, God will protect and bless them, but if they choose to flee to Egypt, they will face destruction and death. However, the people accuse Jeremiah of lying and choose to disobey God’s warning. They decide to disregard His counsel and journey to Egypt, taking Jeremiah and Baruch, his scribe, along with them.
This chapter showcases the people’s lack of faith and their persistent rebellion against God’s word. Despite seeking divine guidance, they reject the prophet’s message, ultimately leading to disastrous consequences.
