1 Samuel Chapter 20

Summery

In 1 Samuel 20, David seeks to confirm Jonathan’s father, King Saul’s, intentions toward him. David is aware of Saul’s animosity towards him and wants to ensure his safety. Jonathan, being David’s close friend, helps him devise a plan to discern Saul’s true feelings. They agree to meet in a field where Jonathan will shoot arrows as a signal. If Jonathan tells his servant that the arrows are beyond him, it will mean David should flee because Saul’s anger is directed at him. But if Jonathan tells the servant that the arrows are near, it will signify David’s safety.

On the appointed day, Jonathan follows through with the plan, and after sending his servant away, he shoots the arrows as agreed upon. When the servant retrieves them, Jonathan calls out to him, revealing the signal’s meaning. David emerges from his hiding place and approaches Jonathan. The two friends reaffirm their covenant and bid farewell.

After David’s departure, Jonathan goes back to the city, while David hides in a field. In the following days, David and Jonathan’s friendship is tested as Saul’s anger grows and he seeks to kill David. Despite the hardships, their bond remains strong, and they make a pact to protect each other’s descendants.
